Those of you who have planned or had the opportunity to buy a new graphics card in the last few months will know that stocks for this product category are currently in short supply. Not only new generation cards (Nvidia RTX 30 Series and AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series), but also cards from previous generations.
The scarcity of graphics card stock is exacerbated by the increasing trend of mining cryptocurrency. Products that were intended for gamers were actually bought out by Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and so on. Based on Nvidia’s own admission, it is likely that this stock shortage will continue until at least April 2021.
Not long ago, Nvidia introduced the RTX 3060, and vendors are preparing to market it from February 25th. But if you look at the trends in the last few months, it is almost certain that this brand-new graphics card will sell out very quickly.
As a temporary solution, Nvidia is reportedly reproducing the old GPU, specifically the RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti. The hope is that, with the increase in stock, these two old graphics cards will not increase in price as they are now. This news is no longer just a rumor, but has been confirmed directly by Nvidia’s representatives to PC World.
What may be the question is, why should the RTX 2060 and GTX 1050 Ti? Why not others, such as the RTX 2070 or GTX 1660? Nvidia did not provide an explanation, but at least we can speculate.
For the RTX 2060, the premise is likely to be to present an old graphics card whose performance does not exceed the new card. The RTX 2060 is also easier to manufacture as it still uses a 12nm manufacturing process, and that means Nvidia will have no trouble keeping up with high demand.
For the GTX 1050 Ti, the possible reason is related to the technical specifications, which is the 4GB GDDR5 memory it carries. Reportedly, in order to efficiently mine Ethereum, a graphics card with more than 4 GB of memory is needed. Reflecting on this assumption, the GTX 1050 Ti should not be glimpsed by crypto miners and can satisfy the thirst of gamers who are intending to upgrade their old PC.
The fact that the type of memory used is still GDDR5 also guarantees that Nvidia will not encounter difficulties in producing it. The reason is, based on rumors circulating, one of the reasons behind the shortage of new generation graphics card stock is the shortage of GDDR6 memory components.
Buying an old graphics card when newer ones already exist may seem unwise. However, if the PC is in urgent need of an upgrade, the old graphics card can certainly be an alternative when the new generation cards are in a stock crisis like now. The problem is only a matter of price, and hopefully this additional stock from Nvidia can help reduce prices to a rational limit.
